The world owes Teddy Sheringham a debt of gratitude today. Yesterday, in the Unicef charity match at Old Trafford, former English international Sheringham absolutely hammered celebrity chef/professional jerk Gordon Ramsay on a tackle during open play. Ramsay was carted off on a stretcher, went to hospital, and was released with what was termed a “back injury”. While I never advocate anyone anywhere being injured on purpose, if anyone deserved that tackle, it was Gordon Ramsay.
Today’s Champions League final has some huge implications for Chelsea. Missing the Champions League next season would cost Chelsea roughly €25 million (based on figures found in UEFA Direct 110) not to mention the additional revenue ticket and merchandise sales would bring in. The biggest change though could be the changes Roman Abramovich decides to make.
It’s no secret Roman’s number one goal for a while has been the Champions League. They’ve shown they can win any number of domestic trophies under his ownership, but the Champions League has always eluded him. That’s why he’s had a revolving door of managers ever since he let go of his greatest hope to win the Champions League, Jose Mourinho. Losing out on the Champions League could very well mean that Roberto Di Mateo’s excellent run as interim manager would come to an end, and there would likely be wholesale changes at Stamford Bridge as he’d be looking to find the magical players to solve all of his problems.
A second rate tournament is not where a billionaire wants to be, and the offseason would get mighty interesting if that were the case.
In just under an hour another important match takes place. It’s certainly not Champions League final important, (it’s more important*) but it’s a game with an estimated £90 million for one of the teams. The NPower Championship playoff final features Blackpool against West Ham. The two former Premiership teams face off to determine who will join Reading and Southampton in the Premier League. A lot of people thought that there was a chance neither team would make it back to the Premier League this year. Blackpool because their talent was going to all get poached, and West Ham because, well, they’re West Ham.
Obviously, both teams managed to keep their wits about them to reach this point. West Ham was in the drivers seat for a lot of the season, but a rough March saw them take just 11 points from nine matches. Blackpool stayed rather consistent, if not unremarkable, this season but still managed to get themselves to this point.
Blackpool faces a tough test as West Ham beat them quite easily this season, 4-0 and 4-1, but this is one match for everything, meaning that you leave everything on the pitch, so really anything can happen.
As we often do, we ask, WHO YA GOT?
*More important claim according to Sam Allardyce, so I mean…
