Argentina’s athletic trainer says Messi is “irreversibly tired”
Argentinian forward and undisputed star Lionel Messi, elected World’s Best Player this year, comes to the World Cup in bad shape and may therefore not be able to live up to expectations.
According to Fernando Signorini, the national team’s athletic trainer, “He [Messi] arrived to the World Cup very tired. The damage is done and it’s irreversible”. Signorini also criticized the excessive number of matches that players - especially key players in European top clubs - have to play in a season, and blamed this mostly on FIFA. “[The World Cup organizers] worry a lot about anti-doping tests, but they don’t care about the fact that some players may have to play up to 70 matches in a season”, he stated.
Despite all this, Signorini said he’s still confident that Messi will be able to shine in South Africa. “He’s one of the best players in football history and I’m sure he’ll prove this during the World Cup, thanks to the experience he gained in the last years”.
